Job Description:
This is a senior level job. An Environmental Health Scientist III inspects the largest and most complex food, dairy and facilities; assists in the planning, coordination, and implementation of a food and dairy compliance program. Reviews state and federally regulated food, dairy and industrial hemp industry facilities and advises others on the interpretation and enforcement of laws. Performs inspections and investigations involving a high degree of independent judgment, assures the reconditioning, removal or destruction of condemned products, and prepares cases and court actions. These activities include essential food safety and public health protection responsibilities. Maintains liaison with federal and local agencies and gives talks and lectures to interested parties. May serve as the agency's subject matter expert in one or more areas of specialty, such as, meat, shellfish, dairy and industrial hemp etc. Provides support to other staff within the department.

Principal Duties:
  • Will be working in and around controlled substances, including cannabis production and processing. Inspecting facilities, machinery, equipment, systems, etc., to verify safety, maintenance, sanitary conditions, functions, and quality.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
  • Gathers, identifies, and/or stores samples of materials to be tested on site or forwarded to a laboratory for testing.
  • Condemns, detains, embargoes, or stops sale of unfit equipment, machinery, structures, or food products.
  • Maintains detailed inspection or investigation records, prepares reports, and attends to other related administrative requirements.
  • Evaluates cases and determines need for on-going agency involvement.
  • Issues or recommends issuance of orders, citations, sanctions, and/or warnings for infractions involving violations of federal and/or state laws, rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or work unit and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.
  • Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
  • Develops educational materials and speaks to state or community groups.
  • Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
The Ideal Candidate:
  • A current Environmental Health Scientist License, or the ability and qualification to obtain one.
  • Possess extensive knowledge, experience and training of food safety, processing standards, processing equipment, HACCP, product extraction methodologies.
  • Possess extensive knowledge and experience of existing federal, state and local regulations pertaining to food, dairy, and dietary supplements.
  • Must have a Bachelor's or Masters' Degree in another area of study you must have at least 30 semester hours of science credits from any of the areas of study listed above.

Supplemental Information

  • Adequate visual acuity is required.
  • BS Degree, or higher, in a related field of study.
  • Licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Scientist
  • Must be FDA and NEHA certified.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
